Don't care how much of a worker he was, "brutal" doesn't even begin to describe how bad he was. In the man's own words, when he was at QoS: "If I can play for Rangers, anybody can"

Not the best.

Not his fault he got the first team gig though.

Probably one of the worst players ever to pull on a Rangers strip during that era.

frankieboy
30-05-2013, 11:56
Him and Fyfe went to Hivs for Iain Munro.

He scored 19 in 54 games,not a bad return.

Ally was one of many bad players we had in that era. But no matter how piss he was,he done what most of us haven't. Pulled on the Blue jersey

Someone once posted that he worked in a fairly senior position in banking.

One of the most intelligent Rangers players but perhaps not one of the best.

30-05-2013, 11:57
He was a university graduate and I remember him going to Hibs along with Graham Fyfe in exchange for Iain Munro. As most have said by no means a wonderful player but we all would have liked to have made 54 appearances for Rangers and scored 20 goals in the process.

played golf with him a few times over the years (nice guy shame about his golf)

remember talking to him about Chris Burke and i said to him - have you ever heard of anyone getting sun stroke @ Pittodrie to which he replied 'yes me' seemingly shares that embarrassment with wee Burkey :D

Had senior position within HSBC Glasgow, or certainly did up to a couple of years ago. Really nice guy who always holds our club in the highest regard, and is the first to admit he wasn't one of our greatest players.

Yet watching him he would often just pull something out of the bag and you would shake your head and say, maybe there is a player there.
There wasn't.

But he was certainly entertaining.

Always remember everytime he was on the ball Archie McPherson or whoever would say "the balding Ally Scott" never just his name.
Just one of those things I have always remembered from those days. The baldism was rife in back in the day :D

Ally isn't involved in football full-time but he does media work for one of the news agencies at weekends and is a regular in the Ibrox press box.

I've been in his company on many European trips, to which he paid his own way, he is definitely a real Rangers man and, although a modestly talented player, at least he did get to live the dream.

A genuine good guy.

He got a first-class degree in Natural Philosophy (i.e., Physics) at Glasgow University.

This was no mean feat because Firsts were much rarer in those days and Physics is a very demanding subject.

Went to play in West Germany in I think late 1984 or 1985.

Pretty sure he played for Australia v Scotland in the 2 World Cup Play Off games in late 1985.

Scored 2 goals on the opening day of the season against falkirk in the league cup 1973-74, a season I thought the Gers were destined for great things- still disappointed to this day about how things panned out that season - changed back to the old black and red socks at the begining of that season also

I remember Ally Scott as a fast running striker who started well with a good few goals but faded quickly. I even remember chanting with my dad - Ally, Ally, Alastair, Allyyyy, Alastair. Jim Denny was, according to my dad 'the worst bloody player ever to wear a blue jersey' but I remember him being quite a regular in the seventies - he must have been brilliant in training!

He had a decent spell playing wide on the left, utilising his pace.

I recall us being 0-0 with Ayr at Ibrox and not long left. Ally latched on to a short pass back from Davie Wells, drew the 'keeper......and missed.

I watched Ally Scott play with three clubs, in this order - Rangers, Hibs, Morton.

I thought at Rangers he was a bit of a pansy, used to get bullied by physical defenders.

At Hibs, I thought he was quite the opposite, a bit of an animal actually.

By the time he got to Morton, I think he found his level, and was neither over-physical himself, nor would be bullied by opposition defenders.

I have also met him (although would not have recognised him) and he seemed a decent sort of guy.

A pal was a youth coach at Hearts when they signed Chris Robertson. He told me they signed him to get his wee brother on board.

I have spent more than the odd moment during the course of the past 40 years wondering how the guy ever got a game for Rangers. He got decent publicity when we signed him from Queens Park and I remember it encouraged my brother and I to go down to Killie for a mid week pre season friendly. It was jaw dropping.

Remember him scoring a terrific goal against Motherwell at Fir Park, a solo run from the half way line. Could never fault him for effort, and his goals per game ratio was pretty decent.

Not quite as bad as some are making out.

31-05-2013, 01:08
My memory of him is running down the wing, beating 3 or 4 players and then inexplicably falling over without an opponent near him. He scored against the Mhanks in the 1-2 League Cup defeat at Ibrox in 1973, though by that time the Rangers End was rather denuded of fans, as most of them had been on the pitch not long before.

I'll always remember that the early evening BBC news that day led with a report on the Bears invading after the Beggars had gone 2-0 up. Whatever the rights and wrongs, I certainly found a perverse pride at the sight of thousands of Bears streaming on with their scarves and banners flying. :ninja:

And we got our revenge on them the following week at the Piggery when we gubbed them 3-1. :D

RTID!
