View Full Version : Jim Traynor responds to ASA probe

Rangers stands firm over "Scotland's most successful club" claim as
Rangers has maintained that it is "Scotland's most successful football club" as the advertising campaign making the claim is probed by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

Earlier, the ASA confirmed to The Drum that it was investigating the radio and press campaign following 62 complaints about the claim by the club to be Scotland's most successful club.

James Traynor, director of communications for Rangers was in no doubt of the club's stance when he responded to The Drum's request for a reaction to the investigation.

He stated: “Rangers Football Club can confirm they have responded in full to this ridiculous claim and we know the Advertising Standards Authority will take the same view as the football authorities, the European Club Association (ECA), Lord Nimmo Smith and the panel of the London Stock Exchange. For the avoidance of doubt we stress again Rangers FC is Scotland’s most successful football club.”

The campaign ran following the liquidation of Rangers, which led to the new holding company being formed as a result and buying the assets to the club, before being accepted into the Third Division by the Scottish Football League. This has led to consternation among fans with many claiming the club to be the same as before, while many claim otherwise (see the comments here for example.)

As a result of the complaints received, the ASA will now have to determine whether Rangers are entitled to describe themselves as "Scotland's most successful club" or not, which could lead to the campaign being banned from running again featuring the claim should they rule against the club.

You think he should sit there and read newspapers and bitch at folk all day, or do you think he should get the actual Media department sorted out so that its working like a well oiled machine?

Why don't we just forgive everyone for every mistake they made about Rangers ? We really need to take a stand against people who write this stuff. Traynor isn't just anybody he was a top journalist whose job it was to properly investigate these matters and report on them . It's not exactly complicated.

The club is absolutely correct to comment on this, and I'm glad to see they have. Problem is they should have been fighting the new club lies from the very beginning and it's a fundamental error of judgement in the current climate of unprecedented hate against our club to not challenge every single attack on us.

All enemies, small or big and of whatever significance must be squashed and dealt with.

i dont know why the asa are bothering with this, any company can claim to be no.1 in any field, the point is people investing in the new co. knew exactly what they were buying into! so the fact asa are even investigating suggests they are infested with timmy, which might imply they will be out to get us. but their dreams of points deductions and title stripping are long gone.. if rangers aren't scotlands most successful coub, then who the hell is??

When the asa rule in our favour Timothy will once more go into meltdown. It'll be fun.

What Id like to see though is some sort of injunction against the press with the real threat of legal action against those who falsely claim we are a new club.

If we dont we run the risk that our brand is devalued and by extension we suffer financially and reputationally. It prolly costs money to do so though but I think it'd be worth it to shut up Walker, Cosgrove, Cowan, Spence, Guidi, Young, Keevins, Delahunt, etc.
