View Full Version : Is This the Best Euro Championship?

I've witnessed quite a few Euro Championshps - 1984 onwards.

This is by far the best thus far.

Goal wise, it's been excellent.

Best major tourney in a while

Euro 2000 was great....this is streets ahead of WC 2010 and for that we can be grateful.

Quality not always there but teams at least want to attack and goals are flying in.

Streets ahead of any recent tournaments.

The collapse of the Dutch yet the still have a shot
The embarrassment of Ireland - tremendous
Tight groups across the board with no team through yet

Excellent contest and hopefully only get better

Sir Duncan Ferguson

Tournament has been excellent.

Chalk me up as another who liked Euro 2000 though...the excitement of watching the Dutch and thinking "we could conceivably buy anyone of this squad"...

It's been a good 1st round compared to other tournaments. The matches should get better from here on in as it is now effectively knock-out.

Earl of Leven
15-06-2012, 22:33
Technically and in terms of top class players Euro 2000 was much better but this tournament has seen a real drop in teams 'parking the bus' and it's very welcome.

Really enjoyed it..Not the best in terms of technical skills but honest football with little diving for once.Got to say the officials deserve credit as well..Class with rise to the top though.

It has been one of the best in last 20 years certainly ,hopefully teams wont be too negative in knock out as it sometimes gets cagey and we end up with penalties

The only thing is that the 1st round of Euro 2016 isn't going to be as good as there are going to be 8 teams worse than the ROI in it.

Euro 2000 was the best tournament in my life (44 years) but this one has been brilliant so far.

1984 for me still.

For me Britain ,Platini lit up that tournament .Whats pleasing about this one is teams are generally looking to go forward and score

Italia 90 was my first memory of a major tournament. It will take a truly magnificent tournament to surpass Euro 2000 for me. Goals (and screamers at that) galore, the best game ever (Yugoslavia 3-4 Spain), the best goalless draw ever (Holland v Italy semi), iconic players at the peak of their powers, and a quite fantastic final that produced absolutely the right winner.

I'm not quite feeling the love for the current Euros the way some on here have commented. It's been good, certainly. But it just needs that certain spark (a really top class game or a no-doubter goal of the tournament effort) to really get it going IMO.

84 France was the best. Some absolutely brilliant matches in that one. France - Portugal one of the classics of all time.

I've enjoyed it so far and there has only been a single penalty (missed) and 2 sending offs all in the opening game.

I tend to agree but in fairness those players just aren't around now....football has changed again. More functional now.

I must be getting old or maybe I am out of touch.

I think a lot of thefootball has been rubbish and have fallen asleep more than once during matches.

Tonights was a cracker though, even if a lot if the defending was poor.

I suppose having a competitive tournament is a rarity and in that sense it is great but it is not the best skill levels or flowing football really

Against the grain here but I've been a bit underwhelmed by it.

NO stars, technical levels low, but in fairness it has been positive and teams are attacking....few penalties, red cards, dives etc.

We should be thankful it has halted the decline of recent years.

15-06-2012, 23:35
In the main, progressive technical football is winning the day so far.

1984 and 1988 are both excellent ones due to 2 great winning teams France and Netherlands, and 2 majestic individual performances (Platini and Van Basten).

But it must be the best finals so far since those two.

I actually thought the last tournament four years was one of the best in years, but this isn't far behind.

When even Italy appear to want to have a go, you know its going to be good.

I agree with those saying '84 was the best, although since its expansion 2000 has been the best.

The last World Cup bored me rigid.

This is the best Tournament for quite a while.
Plenty of goals, very little diving, very little feigning injury and the Refs have been decent and unobtrusive.

In terms of the Euro's, 1984 in France was the best.

The last World Cup bored me rigid.

I don't think there's been a genuinely good World Cup since 1986.
They've all pretty much gone downhill since.

By comparison the Euros generally tend to be much more enjoyable.

I've seen them all since 1980 and would really only have 2004 down as a bit of a stinker.

Euro 2000 is the best I've seen but this has been pretty decent so far

still really waiting for that standout game though, I realise Denmark/Portugal and Sweden/England were games that ended 3-2 but I mean something like a Holland/Czech game from Euro 2004, Turkey/Czechs from 2008 etc

something that really standouts as a classic game. Euro 2000 had at least 3 I can think of from the top of my head. Portugal 3-2 England, Yugoslavia 3-3 Slovenia and Yugoslavia 3-4 Spain

I was 8 in 1986, so that was my real tournament i saw. so I don't remember euro 84.

Best Ones,

World Cup
1990, 1994 maybe followed by 2002(I just though it was different and some freak results)

Euros

the euros are always great, because it's a 16 team tournament as opposed to 32. and they're planning to ruin that.

i preferred euro 2008 to this, i missed the final of that, but apparently wasn't missing much, but seeing as we haven't even reached the knockouts yet, it's fair to say i can still compare them.
the final of this will probably be shit too, they always are.

standout games of 2008 for me were:

italy holland
france holland
russia holland
russia spain (both the group game and semi final)
turkey czech republic
turkey croatia (not so much the game but the finish was amazing stuff)
turkey germany
germany portugal
germany croatia

we've had maybe 2 or 3 games of that quality so far IMO, but of course there's plenty of time left for more

Earl of Leven
16-06-2012, 18:16
No real stars
Not the same technical levels

BUT....teams more attack minded than of late, 16 teams is perfect, refs have been better re cards, lack of genuine superstars makes games more even.

Been refreshing.

IMO the WCs since 1998 haven't been great because of the expansion to 32 teams. I think the Euros since then have been better with maybe Euro 2004 being an exception.

Since it's a rarely appreciated art form, I'll put it out there, by and large the defending has been chronic.

Since it's a rarely appreciated art form, I'll put it out there, by and large the defending has been chronic.

Defending at set pieces has been especially bad, I think it's down to having an official behind the goals. Players are now being overly careful.

Is there 8 teams of a good enough standard to come in for the next one?

turkey, belgium, switzerland, serbia, romania, slovakia, norway, scotland/wales?

Would the inclusion of the above nations dilute the quality that much?

USA 94 was a great tournament spoilt only by a crap final. Must admit I'm looking forward to another WC in the Americas as all the matches will be evening/night time kick offs in the UK. Was only a youngster in 1994 and most of the matches were past my bedtime :D

Incredible tournament, the fact that the supposed 'boring' group has me up on the edge of my seat tonight says it all.

Bit of a fly in the ointment tonight with 2 defensive and rather boring teams qualifying. Although the Czechs have a bit more about them than Greece, and deserved their win as Poland lost the plot in the second half.

Hopefully it's Germany for the Greeks in the next round.

I missed tonight's games but I've seen all the others.

The standard of shooting, in general, has been appalling.

The quality of football had been disappointing. I feel like I'm watching twenty-two runners and no footballers sometimes.

There is a distinct lack of craft and guile on display, and it makes me fear for the future of the European game.

There have certainly been some exciting moments, but games in my local park have exciting moments too. At this level, more is required: much more.
