Andy Cunningham made his League debut for Rangers.He had arrived at Ibrox after five years with Kilmarnock and would remain at the club until 1929 when he joined Newcastle United,subsequently becoming the oldest debutant in English League football,two days past his 38th birthday.He later managed United between 1930 and 1935 and then Dundee United between 1937 and 1940. After the Second World War he was a sports journalist and made one further appearance at Ibrox -he kicked off the Centenary match against Ajax in 1973.Capped 12 times by Scotland ,he died in 1973 at the age of 82.

Willie Reid was born in Ballieston and joined the club in 1909 ,going on to become one of the deadliest finishers ever to have worn a Rangers shirt.At the outbreak of the First World War he had joined the armed forces and was therefore lost to football for three seasons and left Rangers to join Albion Rovers,later becoming manager.He died at the age of 80 in 1966.

Two years previously Rangers fans had fought pitched battles with the Spanish police in the very same stadium at the end of the European Cup-Winners' Cup final. This time around the club and the supporters were on their best behaviour,doing much to restore good relations between the two clubs
