View Full Version : Basile Boli - Anyone reckon he er...lied about his age ?

Sir Duncan Ferguson
07-12-2010, 18:54
We bought him at the age of 27 in 1994.

He was playing in Japan by the age of 29 and retired by the age of 30.

I'd heard stories about a degenerative knee injury he supposedly had that was 10x worse than he actually let on but the 1970's racist in me can't help but feel there's a touch of the "Saudi Arabian u-16 team" about this

This was him in April this year

What do we reckon ? Is he really 43 or a helluva lot older ?

His brother was Roger Boli ?

Just wondering if they both deducted same amount of years :)

Seemed to be finished at about 25.

would be a bit hard for him to do that considering he was born in france

I thought Bernard looked a cracking player when he burst on the scene.

Then fell away to feck around about the time he came to us.

Probably because he was about 27 when we were being told he was 17 :)

Bernard was born in Paris.

I think the French are reasonably trust worthy with their birth certificates. :D

As for Boli, he won the Champions League 12 months before we bought him, if he was older than he said I doubt it was a ridiculous amount.

Was seen to sink 4 pints rapid in the old Pier 39 when out with his teammates, and even had the likes of seasoned swallyers,McCoist and Durranty telling him to slow down as they were out for the whole night. This seems to be the highlight of his Rangers career.

I swither between feeling he was poor and blaming Walter for being prone to playing him out of position.

In the book it just says something like "Ivorian born Boli, who was seven months older than Cantona (well, according to his passport anyway)..."

Just thought it strange that there are journalists in France who also think this...

Was superb in the 3-1 victory against the beasts at hampden, playing alongside Alan Maclaren, who iirc may have been making his debut ??

If Boli is older than he said he was, he still managed to play and score the winner in a CL final only 12 months before joining us !

CL winner and French international centre half, who was rather strangely deployed at right back for us.

No danger that he is 43

I quite liked Boli - no farting about with him, he was build like the side of a house and his job was to stop the opposition.

Remember that summer when all the hype was about Boli and some Danish bloke was also signed up? Whatever happened to him?

I remember my esteemed brother-in-law, who was a real player in his day, giving his opinion on this matter. It was along the lines of Boli is some player and hard as feck he will do well in Scotland but Laudrup is maybe a wee bit too delicate for our game.

One of the great FF (or Rangers fans) myths is that Boli was played out of position. He played as part of a back four with us (with the notable exception of that night against AIK Athens at home).

He also played as part of a four with Marseilles (including the against against us) and with France. In spite of the FF myth he was not a sweeper behind a back four before joining us.
