It was 45 years ago this week, that Rangers scored 6 goals in three consecutive games, at three different grounds, inside a week.
Oct 2nd...6-0 v Stirling Albion (h)...Div 1... (Sorensen, Willoughby, Wood, Wilson (2) Johnston)...Att. 20,000
Oct 6th....6-4 v Kilmarnock (n).....LC sf... (McLean (3), Willoughby, Forrest, Henderson).............Att. 54,702
Oct 9th....6-1 v St Mirren (a)....... Div 1... (McLean (2), Forrest (3), Johnston).............................Att. 33,000
Rangers had already played a dozen games that season, 8 League Cup games, and 4 in the League.
Despite losing, two of our first three games at Tynecastle, and Pittodrie, Rangers won their League Cup section, and progressed to the semi finals with a 9-1 aggregate win v Airdrie in the quarters.
In the league we had defeated St Johnstone, and Celtic at Ibrox, and drawn both away games at Partick Thistle, and Dundee.
Rangers welcomed last season's Div 2 winners to Ibrox with a six goal thrashing, that saw recent signing Jorn Sorensen score the opener, and his first goal for the club.
Wouldn't happen today, but Rangers had to play this game without the services of Greig and Henderson, who were in Belfast, on Scotland duty.
Their replacements didn't do too bad though, with Wilson Wood scoring one, and Davy Wilson helping himself to a brace. Willoughby and Johnston got the other two.
The following wednesday was a big one, a League Cup Semi Final, that saw us take on the Scottish Champions, Kilmarnock at Hampden.
Rangers turned on a scintilating display of attacking football, that ripped the nations best defence to shreds, as they raced to a 6-1 lead with the returning George McLean helping himself to a hat trick. Forrest, Willoughby, and the re instated Willie Henderson scored the other three.
Three goals from the 18 year old Tommy McLean in the last 20 mins for Kilmarnock, put a better reflection on the scoreline, but there was no doubting that Rangers had tore apart the Scottish champions with a remarkable performance of attacking football.
Three days later 33,000 turned up at Love St, and once again an unchanged Rangers side did not disappoint, turning in another six goal performance.
Jim Forrest bagging a hat trick on the day, with George McLean (2), and Willie Johnston getting the others.
Rangers would go on to win their next eight league games, making it 10 consecutive League wins, that saw them sit top of the table with 28 points out of a possible 30, the week before Christmas.
