View Full Version : Just back from today's big game - North Korea women vs. Nigeria women!

Lovely day here in Pyongyang today and with not a lot else to do, a few of us decided to take in the DPRK vs. Nigeria womenís football match at Kim Il Sung Stadium.

http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/9458/football1.jpg

The stadium is in the Moran district of Pyongyang and is very close to the Arch of Triumph (commemorating the Great Leader Kim Il Sungís ousting of the Japanese imperialists from the Korean peninsula in 1945).

http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/9533/football11.jpg

We had a few pre-match drinks at the local hotel, and made our way to the stadium. There arenít too many western influences in North Korea, so imagine our surprise when we saw this wee guy! :D

http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/1298/football12.jpg

The stadium holds about 50,000, but wasnít full today. Iíve been a couple of other times, to see the DPRK menís side take on UAE and Saudi Arabia in their recent World Cup qualifying campaign. Thereís usually not much of an atmosphere and you could hear a pin drop at times. Thatís probably due to the fact that most of the people present donít have a choice in whether they want to be there or not.

http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/5554/football13.jpg

http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/8474/football3.jpg

http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/9136/football4u.jpg

The DPRK ladies are ranked fifth in the world and were expected to ease to victory over a Nigerian side ranked about 20 places below them. Here are the teams; not a looker between them, but at least Iím adhering to the rules!

http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/5323/football5.jpg

http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/6168/football6.jpg

North Korea dominated the game and took an early lead through their number 9, who was one of the best players on show. The Koreans knocked the ball around nicely and kept it well. When the Nigerians eventually got a touch, they invariably hoofed it up the park and quickly surrendered possession.

http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/5525/football15.jpg

The Koreans should have extended their lead but missed chance after chance after chance. This one, unbelievably, came back off the postÖ

http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/2623/football14.jpg

And this effort was well saved by the Nigerian keeper (todayís man of the match).

http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/8215/football16.jpg

It wasnít a dirty game but there were a couple of midfield clashes , and one yellow card.

http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/5081/football8.jpg

http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/6820/football9.jpg

Nigeria didnít offer anything as an attacking force and Korea held on easily for a 1-0 victory.

http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/5247/football10.jpg

And, of course, the Pyongyang Chosun Few couldnít let the day go by without taking advantage of a photo opportunity! :)

http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/7448/football7.jpg

Admin, apologies if the photos are a bit on the big side!

Bus broke down on the way back from the stadium. But buses don't break down in North Korea as we soon found out staring down the barrel of an AK47. Oh how we laughed and sang as we made the 12 mile journey back to the hotel in our bare feet!!

Been working here for just over a year - nine months to go now!

Taking pictures inside the stadium was no problem, though I was a bit worried that I might incur some wrath for whipping out the Red Hand. Doubt if the Koreans know what it is, to be honest!

Around the city, you have to be a bit more careful. I know a few ex-pats who have spent a few hours in a holding centre for taking photos of things they shouldn't have!

Meant to post this picture as well - a bit of pre-match propaganda karaoke (though no-one was singing along)!

A lot of the foreign aid workers and international organisations have their own internet connections here. Our work just got ours installed a month or so ago. But it is indeed true that the Korean proles can't access the interweb.

Strange old place this. I walked home after the game, shoulder to shoulder with a few thousand Koreans and I saw one of the waitresses who works at one of the local bar/restaurants that foreigners can use. I smiled and gave her a wee wave, but she looked at me like she'd seen a ghost and sped away. Funny, but sad - if I'd stopped and tried to talk to her, someone else probably would have reported her. Shocking state of affairs.

It's a bureaucratic nightmare to get entry, but it can be done. If memory serves there's one weekly passenger flight that comes in from China and a train that comes in through Russia.

Wouldn't fancy whipping the flag of a British nation out in the Kim Ill Sung arena. You could face a stretch in Yodok if you get caught doing that. :D

I paid a visit to a university here not too long ago and saw a noticeboard on which there were pictures of three women and seven men. I thought they were high achievers whose exploits were being highlighted, but it turned out that it was a guide to what haircuts were acceptable for young people and, in the women's case, how they should apply their make-up! The girls are supposed to have short, bob-style haircuts, and most do.

There are flights into Pyongyang from Beijing every day except Wednesday and Sunday (Air China on Monday and Friday, and the national carrier, Air Koryo, on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday). I flew with Air Koryo recently - great fun! No overhead lockers, just shelves like you'd find on a train, and the seats flipped up when you weren't sitting on them! :D

The train also runs from Beijing and takes about 27 hours. Done that a couple of times too. Good way to see the Korean countryside, but you have to prepare yourself not to shit for the duration - the facilities are a disgrace!

Have to say that there are too many fussy guys on ff. I would defo give the number 13 from Nigeria one, as well as her colleagues numbered 8,9, and the larger breasted ones 16, 17 and 18.
I take it the op has been caught and "banged up abroad" for taking pics that were against the interests of national security as he hasn't posted for a while.

See you at Ibrox in 2045 mate. WATP

Fascinating thread! Keep the updates coming.

What are you doing for work over there? can you divulge that info?

This is one of the most interesting posts I have ever read on here. When you return Master shake more information on your trip would be great.

North Korea is a country that really interests me. I look forward to hearing about their celebrations when they "win" the world cup.

North Korea>>>>>>>>South Korea ;)

what do you mean when? they have won it the last 6 times on the trot ffs :p

Amazing thread - master Shake, you would appear to be a pioneer of sorts, bringing us info and pictures of a forbidden country.

oops., i have said too much

Still my favourite ever Bear Pit thread. Just when you thought you had seen it all on FF, you get a bear posing with his top and flag inside the bloody Kim Il-Sung stadium. :D

I found out, through watching this film (http://www.hanadulsed.com/) at the Pyongyang International Film Festival, that the referee is a former DPRK international player who was reknowned for her grace and good looks.

Interesting to note that the draw for next year's Wimmin's World Cup was made recently - DPRK and the United States in the same group. Should be fun.

Bumping this thread.

The other thread on North Korea reminded me of this one. I am fascinated by the country and this was definately one of the best threads i've seen on these boards.

Any word on the O.P? Still out there? Any more photos or stories to share?

Thank you, I was away all summer and missed this. Brilliant thread!
