Strange how when you see old black and white photos from Bygone era's you seem to imagine that there was not the same colour on show from the crowd as you get today, I know my late Father said most fans wore some kind of emblem back in the 50s, be it a scarf, Rossette, a bunnet or simply used the old rattle which were apparently available in the teams colours :D

It was 1963.

I was not talking about this particular photo, just old black and white photos from the old days in that they often looked like there would be no real show of colour among the fans.

The photo was to highlight that this may not have been the case ;)

Superb stuff Sam as ever. Cheers mate. I love these old pics. The scarf I have now is a 60's replica that I bought from the Rangers shop in Belfast, the one with the rampant lion based on the old linen scarfs back then.
In fact I remember the old scarfs had supporters club emblems on them as well, that the rosette and a rattle, try that now and you'd get locked up.

Stand to be corrected but was this not the day we thought we had won the league at Rugby Park circa 1968 only to hear that the manky mob had scored a late winner against Morton at Porkhead 15 minutes into injury time or something? Slight exaggeration but you know what I mean!

A passion handed down from generation to generation, which practically oozes from that picture. No stewards to harass them, no "rules, terms and conditions" to browbeat them, just unbridled enthusiasm for their club.

In that spirit, lets once again get the scarves raised as they were in days of yore, when ours colours shone radiantly before the world, before we abandoned the stage to the plagiarists of Paranoiadise.

"Rangers", a name loved then and before, as it's it's loved now.

It was handed to me by a mate of my dads, who moved to England and wasn't ever moving back to Scotland so decided to give me his rangers scarf from his childhood as he was now a Manchester United supporter.

I wore it with pride at school in England, i can't believe how old it is, i always thought it was 70/early 80's.

Ah, the terracing, that was when there was an atmosphere!

Downside was getting out of the away grounds, remember being crushed at Parkhead,Easter Road and Tynecastle. Jumping down behind the terracing at Firhill, quite scary!

And feet not touching the ground as my father held me as we descended those terracing steps at Ibrox in the early European Cup ties with crowds of 80,000 being the norm.

I thought that was exciting, little did I realise what was to take place.

I was lucky, we always came down that staircase, but I was unable to go that fateful day.

I know what you mean mate.

Many times over the years I`ve thought back to some really hairy times leaving a ground.
You think nothing of it at the time. It was all part of 'being at the game'. I suppose being a 10 year-old it didn`t faze me. It just never occurred to me how dangerous it was.

Terraces at that time created a bond though. I`ve given up trying to engage in conversation with guys around me. I don`t have a ST though so it`s different guys every time but that shouldn`t stop you talking to guys around you.

Why did we ever abandon the scarf raising and leave that field clear for the Parkhead Plagiarists and their stolen Liverpool song?

I remember being in the Rangers End at Hampden circa 1970, or 1971, for a Scottish League Cup/Scottish Cup semi and kept turning round from the action every few minutes to look back up the terracing at what was the most wonderful and colourful sight I'd ever seen, as the Cry to the tune of Amazing Grace was sung.

I do indeed have a copy of the picture for her.Unfortunately i never saw her over the Ne`er when i was home, due to me being too lazy, hungover,to go down to the house.Anyway she will be embarrased as hell, when she see`s it.

She was a big Davie Wilson fan.Absolutely loved him.
Good stuff
Mind a post a photo of how she looks now

The pics at the beginning are from the early '60's. The 1960 Kilmarnock final I remember getting a 'Daily Express' paper hat for the game. The trouble was for most games when I was nipper, unless I got into the Stand, I couldnae see over the crowd. There were Union Jacks and Saltires back then and against the 'tic (that was the typical short-hand version for the tarriers) especially, our crowd at the Copland Rd end would send up, literally, hundreds of orange and blue balloons. Everyone had a scarf, normally made of linen (I think). After the game, ye'd rush to the newstand to get the 'pink' Evening Times, or the 'green', Evening Citizen, to read about how we won. My most vivid experience of that period was the belief we would always win, which we didn't, except against the tarriers :D
To be in a crowd of 120,000 had to be experienced to be believed. As a wee boy, ye had to get in the ground at least a good half-hour before kick-off to 'bag' yer spot, usually in front of a staunchion, balancing on 2 used Tenant lager cans from the auld yins. To get in, y'ed wait and ask 'hey, mistur, gonnae giies a liftie' - to get lifted over the turnstile and get in for free. :)

Its got to be the schoolboys enclosure at Hampden for a Scottish Cup final I think.. Take your pick from 1969 1971 or 1973. Looking at the blue college jumper on the left my guess would 1973.

That's another cracking pic, Sam.

Collar and Tie Loyal out in force in the West Enclosure, I would guess early 60s?

Even in those days we were a cut above,
Ranger Casuals? No Chance, we had Rangers Formals!;)

You do feel sorry for the young lads supporting Rangers today as they never got a chance to experience the atmosphere at ibrox in the 70's. Sitting on the east enclosure wall with your feet on the track, the chance to buy a macaroon bar ;), dodging cans of piper export and bottles of EL'd. when the opposition scored :D
Or the travelling support at the piggery of over 20,000 bears giving it big licks for 90 mins, or even missing ten minutes of any semi or final at Hampden after we scored due to the Black ash cloud rising from the terracing !

We were allowed to support our team back then and you better believe we did every where we went. "those were the days my friend".

Just had a look thro the whole thread and it got me thinking. When did wearing a Gers top become fashionable to wear at the games. going by the pics it must have been in the 70s.
