Sad news and for the trumpets on here who bandy the word 'legend' about. In Jimmy Greaves we have a true, genuine, bona fide football legend.

Sad news. A man who has a legitimate claim to be the best striker the UK produced, and who beat his demons to live a longer life.

Heard a story once about him playing for Spurs at Ibrox. The teams had lined up and the crowd were belting out The Sash.
Jimmy apparently thought it was the Scottish national anthem.

A player who will be talked about 100 years after his career ended. Did only the 11 players who played in the 1966 final get a medal or did the whole squad get one same as now?

He had a mini stroke a few years too. Wish him a speedy recovery.

Somebody post the link to his chat show. I think the Alan Partridge Christmas Special was based on it.

A genuinely nice, humble man who would happily to talk about football all day long. I'm a tad biased but he was, for me, unarguably the greatest forward England has ever produced. I hope he manages to recover from this.

Was too young to remember Jimmy Greaves as a player, but my old man told me how good he was, remember watching him and ISJ on a Saturday growing up, also remember watching a documentary about himwhere he spoke of being an alchoholic, and then his recovery, very sad.

The guy was a true legend of the game, and it was sad the a guy of his calibre missed out on Englands greatest triumph in 66.

Sad news, hope he manages to hang in there. As has been mentioned, a real legend of British football.

Guys like Jimmy should receive far more attention on places like Sky when they have time to fill in. The younger generation need educating that truly top-flight footballers didn't only start with the advent of TV money and the Champions League.

Yeah Saint & Grevsie was a great show on a Saturday lunchtime when I was a kid, Jimmy also used to do the TV reviews on TV-AM before I went to school and he was always a character. Hope he pulls through ok

Get well Jimmy. You gave us some great laughs on the Saint & Greavsie show. I bet Ian St John never stopped laughing.
My old man said Greavsie and Law were the two best forwards he saw in the flesh.

Greavsie waxed lyrical about playing for Spurs against Rangers at Ibrox in European competition in the early 60's.He said it was an unforgettable experience with a fantastic and terrifying crowd of jocks.

Absolute Legend. As someone had said on here that word is used and abused far too easily. Brilliant player and by all accounts a very decent fella.
'Whats the secret of scoring Jim ?'
' Learn to pass the ball, then pass it to the back of the net....it's not rocket science'

Get well Greavsie

As others have said a total legend of the game and have many happy memories of Saint and Greavsie, hope he makes a full recovery.

To answe the question It was only the 11 on the field who got them but FIFA decided in the mid 2000s to give medals to all the non playing staff from all the world cups, Greavsie got his in 2009.

You never said truer words. I used to wonder back in the days of 'The Saint & Greavesie' if the youngsters who watched it realised what a great football player he was. He was one of the genuine 'greats' of his day.

Me too, back in the day when they were not afraid to offend.

Didn't Greavsey used to refer to us as "The Jockos" or "The Jocks" ?

Quite possibly the greatest striker England has ever produced. Greaves is a real legend, the kind of player that genuinely belongs in a Hall of Fame. More than that, though, he's an engaging, entertaining and straight talking guy. He'd be excellent company in the pub or over dinner, and yes, I know he's had his problems with the demon drink.

I wish him all the best for a speedy and complete recovery.

An excellent player from the era when there were an abundance of great players.

I remember as a kid watching him score a lot of goals in the box and thinking that Was easy. 'I could do that'

He was invited to this years League Cup final by both Spurs and Chelsea. Turned them both down as he wanted to watch the tennis first then settle down on his sofa and not get caught up in all the 'razzmatazz '

When asked Chelsea fans say he played his best football at chelsea.
Tottenham fans say it was at Spurs
England fans say for England.
West Ham fans say it was at Spurs, chelsea and England

....get well you true legend
