Stan Collymore, the former footballer and now broadcaster, has come under fire from equal rights campaigners for using "homophobic" language on Twitter during the Premier League match between Southampton and Manchester City on Sunday.
Collymore drew criticism for his use of the term ‘fairies’ – a derogatory term for homosexual men – in response to Sergio Aguero’s yellow card for diving during City’s 3-0 win.
The former Liverpool, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest striker, who earlier this year demanded that Twitter do more to combat homophobic and racist language after he himself was subjected to offensive messages on the social network site, tweeted to his 667,000 followers: “Maybe if they didn’t have so many fairies going down like Devon Lock we’d get less confused decisions.”
Collymore’s remark was immediately challenged by Football v Homophobia, the worldwide initiative opposing homophobia in football, who wrote in response: “Whatever you think about diving, homophobic abuse is unacceptable.”
Other users of the social media site added their own criticism.

The term ‘fairy’ has historically been used as a slang term suggesting femininity in men.
A spokesperson for the anti-discrimination group Kick It Out said: “Only Stan Collymore himself would be able to clarify what he meant when using the word. There does need to be greater education around the use of such terminology, as ‘fairy’ has historically been used as a slur towards members of the LGB&T community. It is important these sensitivities are recognised.”
It is not the first time Collymore who has worked for a range of websites and television stations, has caused controversy with his outspoken remarks.
Earlier this year there were calls for the 43-year-old to be sacked from his role with Talksport for posting that the United Kingdom ‘thieved’ the Falkland Islands.
At about the same time, Collymore was reportedly ‘dropped’ as a pundit for BBC’s Match of the Day 2, despite earlier in the year being invited to appear on the show.
Last year a Canadian hockey player, Evander Kane of the Winnipeg Jets, was forced to apologise after using the term ‘fairy’ to describe NBA player Chris Bosh.

This isn’t breaking news, but he is an absolute moron. I had the pleasure of listening to him commentate on a game on the radio a few weeks ago, and his commentary style is utterly horrible, it sounds so forced.

Neil Warnock was pulled for using fairy a few seasons back.

FOOTBALL manager Neil Warnock's televised comments that his team played like "fairies" have been deemed unacceptable by BBC bosses after a viewer complained.

The Queens Park Rangers boss made the remark in a Match Of The Day interview following a 2-2 draw against Cardiff City in April.

A viewer claimed it was "a homophobic stereotype" and should not have been shown. Today the BBC apologised and agreed it should not have been aired.

However, the Corporation said it would not take any further action because programme-makers had already "expressed regret".

Warnock made the comment during the April 23 edition of Match Of The Day Live, saying: "We defended like fairies in the first half but the first two goals could have come straight out of the Premier League."

In its ruling, the BBC's complaints unit said: "The remark was unacceptable, and it was a matter of regret that it had gone unnoticed by the programme-makers, and therefore without comment or apology, at the time.

"However, the programme-makers had already acknowledged the unacceptability of the remark and expressed regret that it had not been dealt with appropriately."

A BBC spokeswoman said: "This was a live interview of which we had no editorial control.

"The BBC acknowledge the unacceptability of the remark and apologise that it had not been dealt with appropriately on air at the time."

Anything that causes Stan grief after some of his recent comments is fine by me. More power to their elbow. So to speak.

So fairies is negative, yet this lobby breezed in and took ownership of the word "Gay" in an attempt to give this type of lifestyle a positive slant. I'm offended by this:eek:

There is something pleasing about watching Collymore become victim of the same uber-PC culture he has worked so hard to help create in this country.

Jesus wept. Collymore is an absolute throbber of a man but that's not offensive. The lines between what is and isn't offensive are becoming ever more blurred.

I'd usually agree with the comments about the easily offended PC brigade.

But Collymore is sometimes the first one to squeal racism, so f*ck him.
