As holders of the Scottish Cup,Rangers were invited to participate in two friendly matches with their English counterparts,Sheffield Wednesday who had beaten West Bromich Albion in the English FA Cup final.The first of these matches attracted a crowd of 23,986 to Hillsborough.

Rangers' first season in Europe had ended at the first hurdle against the French champions; there was some trepidation when they were paired with the French champions St.Etienne the following season. A crowd of 85,000 saw the French side take the lead after 14 minutes, but a steady stream of Rangers attacks soon pulled that back and enabled them to take a 3-1 lead into the second leg.

Although to be fair they were a half decent outfit themselves in those days.
